The Three Federal Folk & Traditional Arts Agencies

Since its creation by Congress in 1965 as an independent federal agency, the Endowment has awarded grants that support projects of the highest artistic quality to benefit the American public. As the largest single funder of the nonprofit arts sector in the United States, the Endowment has awarded more than 111,000 grants in all 50 states and the six U.S. jurisdictions. The National Endowment for the Arts, an investment in America's living cultural heritage, serves the public good by nurturing human creativity, supporting community spirit, and fostering appreciation of the excellence and diversity of our nation's artistic accomplishments.
The American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress A very large site. Perhaps the most important site for folk and traditional arts in the nation. The Center's website includes full texts of selected publications; digital presentations of online collections; a growing list of links to other resources in ethnographic studies; the Folkline Information Service, which provides timely information on national events, jobs, and training opportunities in folklife; and the Folklife Sourcebook: A Directory of Folklife Resources in the United States.

The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage Included in this big site is the Annual Festival of American Folklife, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (and on-line searchable catalogue), Educational Kits, The "Talk Story" Newsletter, and staff directory.

Other Folk & Traditional Arts Agencies and Organizations with National Scope

Founded in 1888, theAmerican Folklore Society serves to stimulate interest and research in all aspects of the study of folklore and folklife. The Society exists to further the discipline of folklore studies, to improve the professional well-being of its members, and to increase the respect given to diverse cultures and their traditions. National Council for the Traditional Arts This the official NCTA site with current information on events and festivals, including the National Folk Festival and the Lowell Festival.
PUBLORE Publore Archives, a web-based archive of current and past messages on the folklore public programs email listserv. You can apply to join the Publore from there, or contact Claude Stephenson (CStephen@OCA.STATE.NM.US).
ffc The Fund for Folk Culture "...has awarded over 4.25 million dollars in nearly 450 grants to more than 375 organizations and a small number of individuals in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Republic of Palau. A tax- exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the FFC adds significant intermediary value to funds provided by private foundations, government agencies, and individual contributors." The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency created in 1965. The Endowment's mission is to enrich American cultural life by promoting knowledge of human history, thought and culture throughout the nation. The Endowment accomplishes that mission by providing grants for high-quality humanities projects in four funding areas: preserving and providing access to cultural resources, education, research and public programs. NEH grants typically go to cultural institutions such as museums, archives, libraries, colleges, universities, public television and radio stations, and to individual scholars. The Endowment has reached millions of Americans with projects and programs that preserve and study our cultural heritage, while providing a foundation for the future.
