Terry- Over the years, several folks have asked me for the listing of public sector publications I used for teaching intro to folklore (1991!). I finally got it converted from wordperfect and 5" floppy to word. I'm attaching it instead of sending to publore because of the attachment problem. There are some errors in authorial attribution (a few CA cites), but I've lost the corrections. Maybe it could be posted w/some note about that w/requests for any corrections? I was published in the public sector newsletter in 1991, but things weren't very electronic then. Thanks so much for keeping tapnet alive! Riki <<intrfolk.doc>> Rachelle H. Saltzman, Ph.D.

ENGL 314-10/University of Delaware
This course introduces the student to basic concepts about folklore,
folklife, and folk art. Reading selections throughout the course derive
from different culture areas and ethnic groups in order to provide some
sense of the variety of folk groups in the United States and the effect
of the cultural and natural environment on folklore. Most of the articles
were written by public sector folklorists (folklorists employed by federal,
state, or private/non-profit agencies) for the general public.
"Introduction to Folklore" is a highly interactive course: students are expected to complete all reading assignments, participate in class discussions, conduct fieldwork, and critique each other's written work. Students should come to each class prepared to discuss the readings assigned for that day. If discussion do not proceed as if students have done the reading, quizzes will be given--though I would prefer to avoid this.
Requirements for this course include attendance, writing assignments, peer critiques, participation in class discussion, research proposal, and a final project or paper. Class format will be lecture and discussion, with the emphasis placed on discussion. I expect assignments to be completed and submitted on time; the penalty for late assignments is half a letter grade for each day that the assignment is late. All written assignments must be typed, double-spaced; I will not accept any handwritten papers.

UNIT II: CONCEPTS ABOUT FOLK GROUPS AND ETHNICITY
The second unit on folk group and ethnicity explores different kinds of folk groups, how in-group members define themselves, how out-group members define them, and different criteria for group identity. The assignment for this unit is for students to pick a folk group to which they belong and write about it in descriptive way, noting criteria for group membership, how an individual becomes part of that group, and how he/she recognizes others in his/her group. This 500-750-word (2-3 pages) paper must be in essay format.

The third unit consists of readings, discussion, and a practical exercise in fieldwork. Students will practice their interviewing techniques on each other. The assignment for this and the following unit is to collect three "texts" complete with contextual notes to include dates, descriptions of places, informants, performance details, and personal thoughts as to the messages being expressed. If all such details are not included, I will assume you have made up your data and you will receive an F for the assignment. Fieldwork should begin by 10/3/91. Assignment will be due in class for peer critiques on 10/10/91; final drafts are due in class 10/15/91. See description of Unit IV for further details.

UNIT IV: FOLK LITERATURE AND FOLK SPEECH (legends, tales, jokes, urban legends, xerox lore)
During this unit, students explore some of the different genres of folk
literature by reading descriptions, hearing field tapes, and collecting
their own examples of legends, tales, jokes, urban legends, or xerox lore.
The writing assignment for this unit is to collect one example from each
of three genres or three examples of one genre (either collection to be
from one folk group--preferably the group explored in the second writing
assignment). As noted above, the students are to note the genre/s, their
fieldwork techniques, the texts, and the meaning of the texts to the collector
and the informants. At least 2-3 sessions with informants will be necessary
to elicit this information. It is useful for the collector to check out
his/her impression of what has occurred (event/s and meaning/s) with his/her
informants. They probably understand why they told a particular joke or
story better than the collector.

UNIT VI: PERFORMANCE GENRES (folk music, song, drama, festivals, rituals)
During the last unit before the final projects, the course explores several performance genres, e.g. folk music, song, drama, festivals, rituals, and so on. Besides reading essays describing and critiquing those genres, students will also view documentary films that capture folkloric performances. The assignment for this unit is to write a 500-word (2-page) review of one of the films on reserve in the library. Students should argue whether or not the film maker/s have persuaded the viewers that their subjects are relevant and interesting and that their topic is or is not well-conceived and executed. Suggestions as to what the film maker should/not have done may be incorporated into the review. The final draft of the film review is due Thursday, November 21, 1991.
